The Voice Against Xenophobia

Remember the Tanzanian artist who once used his music to speak against the wave of xenophobic violence in South Africa? That was James Piusi Lihako, popularly known as Zillvega

While he has been away from the studio, working as a Supervisor at TANESCO (Tanzania Electric Supply Company), he hasn’t lost his passion for using art to drive social change. With tensions rising again in South Africa, Zillvega is now calling on fellow artists to use their voices to advocate for peace.

Six years ago, as xenophobic attacks erupted in parts of South Africa, Zillvega released a powerful track addressing the issue. The song urged unity and condemned the violence against foreign nationals. At the time, it resonated with many who believed that music could heal the growing rift between African nations

Tragically, April 2026 has once again seen a resurgence of xenophobia in South Africa. Areas like Yeoville and Rosettenville in Johannesburg have been hotspots for anti-immigrant vigilantism. The attacks have sparked diplomatic protests from countries like Ghana and Nigeria, whose citizens have been targeted.

For Zillvega, watching history repeat itself is heartbreaking. He is now encouraging a new generation of artists to raise their voices. “Musicians cannot afford to be silent,” he says. “Our words can speak truth to power and remind everyone that we are one family.”

A Return to the Game

Though he currently balances his responsibilities at TANESCO, Zillvega has not given up on music. He still plans to return with a special 10-year campaign album. The project, which he teases as a major milestone, is meant to celebrate his journey while continuing to advocate for unity across Africa.
